What is a judicial expert assessment?

When a dispute raises a technical question, the judge may appoint an expert to help them understand it. The expert gives a technical opinion; it is the judge who decides.

• The expert is most often appointed by a court decision.
• The parties and their lawyers may also agree to call on a technical specialist (“décret du 18 juillet 2025”).
• The interpreters and translators on the list work with the courts, the police and the gendarmerie.
